How To Treat Lipomas

How To Treat Lipomas

If you have ever discovered lumps under your skin, you will clearly understand how frightening this can seem. In many instances however, they may actually be lipomas, which are benign (non-cancerous) tumours consisting of fat. What actually causes these lumps is not known, other than a possible hereditary link. On discovering any form of growth, a proper diagnosis from a doctor is vital, just to make sure that it is in fact benign. If a lipoma is diagnosed, there is not too much to worry about other than to decide what form of action to take.

Here are a few tips to help deal with the problem and make informed treatment decisions.

1. As already mentioned, a doctor’s visit is essential whenever a lump under the skin is discovered. Lipomas can be moved around beneath the skin, so they are relatively simple to diagnose. They are soft and fatty lumps, and when they are located just beneath the skin, in the subcutaneous tissue, removal is fairly simple.

2. If the lipoma is small, the advice from the medical team may be to leave well alone, as they are benign and normally not painful. The majority of sufferers will only have one or two lumps and may not be noticeable to other people, but self esteem issues may arise. Surgical removal leaves a small scar, so this may also be something to consider when making a decision.

3. Attention must be paid to any increase in size of the lipoma or whether it develops deeper under the skin. In some instances, most noticeably in males, the lipomas can grow deep into the muscle tissue, which inevitably means greater difficulty for removal. Look out for multiple lipomas, which can cause pain, especially if they press against nerves, and be aware that some types of lipoma can develop upon inner body organs.

4. Weigh up the pros and cons of the two methods of lipoma removal. Smaller lipomas can be removed via liposuction, which leaves a much smaller scar but in many cases does not totally remove the tumour and can result in regrowth. If lipoma surgery is carried out properly, all traces of the fatty tissue will be removed, greatly reducing the chance of regrowth, but the resulting scar will be much larger.

5. Always follow medical advice. Even though initial diagnosis may seem clear, a biopsy or MRI scan may be requested for definite confirmation. It is important to be sure as they can become dangerous, especially if developing deep into muscle tissue.

As is the case with all surgical procedures, there will be certain risk factors to be considered following lipoma removal, such as infection, bleeding and scarring.

It is not altogether surprising then, to learn that not everybody finds lipoma surgery an attractive choice. As an alternative, depending upon the appropriate medical advice, there are several natural, home remedies and herbal treatments that may be more tempting, if surgery does not seem to be a suitable solution.…

Happy Holidays! Here’s Your Knee Replacement

Happy Holidays! Here’s Your Knee Replacement

The older my parents get – in fact the older any of my relatives get – the harder it is to find a holiday gift that they could really use. I usually end up getting them a gift certificate for a meal out, or some useless trinket that will sit on their coffee table collecting dust – which they then have to clean. I missed the opportunity two years ago to give my mother (and father) something that they could have really used and that they’d both be raving about to this day – a knee replacement surgery in New Zealand.

You heard me… a knee replacement surgery in New Zealand. See my mother had knee replacement surgery about two years ago and it gave her life back. She’s able to go on walks, travel, bounce my youngest daughter on her knees; things she couldn’t do two years ago. They had money set aside and could afford the surgery.

They were lucky. With the cost of orthopedic medical procedures climbing and wait times increasing, they would likely have been priced out of the surgery today.

This got me thinking. If I knew then what I know now; that health tourism can be a fantastic alternative to high priced surgery in the States; and that it can be safe, convenient and fun at the same time I’d have likely pulled the trigger. My parents have been to New Zealand before and raved about its beauty, the friendly people, the great food and sights. You see, New Zealand also just happens to be a growing mecca for orthopedic related surgeries that are affordable – we’re talking 40 percent less or more! And there’s financial assistance available through third party financing setup especially for just such trips.

You’ll want to do your homework obviously. This won’t be a surprise gift to anyone nor should it be. Research the facilities and providers, check testimonials of other patients, and find out all you can about the surgeons. There are online health tourism sites that do a good job of detailing the process and procedures, and some of them have some decent surgery offers to help you make your decision easier. You’ll also want to make sure that you steer clear of destinations that may not be suitable for the elderly or less adventurous. You’ll certainly want them coming back rested, relaxed, healed and healthy!

Oh well… I guess this year I’ll just have to settle for my gift certificate fallback and some pictures of the kids.…

Raw Foods – The Secret to a Vibrantly Healthy Life

As a nation, we are making ourselves sick with food. When you enter a typical supermarket today, up to 90% of the food on the shelves is processed and by many standards doesn’t even qualify as food. There are ingredients that are not only unpronounceable but completely unrecognizable. There are additives, dyes, artificial sweeteners and chemicals. The average consumer doesn’t know where to turn or who to trust. We go by what tastes good not by what feels good. Many of us don’t even know what healthful food means anymore. We are headed in a dangerous direction.
Yet, there is a solution. A solution that is so easy, so basic, so obvious, most of us don’t even know it exists.
It is called raw foods.
Raw foods are, simply put, any food that is alive. They are not processed, they are not cooked, they do not come in the frozen food section or fried up in a pan. They aren’t found in cans or in a box up on a shelf. Living foods are whole, natural, living fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and seaweeds. If it has a label on it, then chances are it isn’t raw. And if it is, the label will tell proudly proclaim “RAW.”
Living foods can be heated up to temperatures ranging from 105-114 degrees, depending upon who you ask. They can be stored, refrigerated, or frozen. But they are not processed. The ingredients are not created in a lab. And they are always real food.
So what is the big deal? What does it matter?
It matters because what we put in our bodies is who we are. What we feed ourselves determines to a very large degree our health, our sickness, our energy, our clarity, our balance and even our moods. Food affects every aspect of our lives. We cannot live without it but we aren’t careful we won’t be able to live with it either.
If food, then, is so important then it is vitally important we choose our foods carefully. Raw foods are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and energy. Raw foods give our body what it needs to survive and thrive. Raw foods provide us with nutrients as nature intended.
To incorporate more living foods in your diet start by adding one or two more servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Have carrots with hummus, an apple with nut butter, a small salad with lunch or blended smoothie with fruits and veggies. Don’t worry about taking food out. Concentrate on adding healthful, living foods in. It’s a big journey that begins one bite at a time.…

Tips to Know Before Cosmetic Surgery

Tips to Know Before Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a surgery. It is invasive, has a recovery period and can potentially change your life. Therefore, like you would for any other surgery, there are certain aspects that you will have to consider.

The first thing is your motivation. Analyze why you are having the surgery. Is it to please a spouse or to get rid of something that is making it difficult for you to socialize? Cosmetic surgery cannot be a spur of the moment decision. It has to be thought through clearly. Think of what you hope to achieve – is it the looks of a film actor, a better social standing, increased acceptance from family or a spouse?

Though you may consider it unnecessary, take into account your family’s feelings. Would they like you to undergo any change or do they agree with your decision. This matter has to be taken up especially with children. They will have to be explained to, on how things stand to change. You have to also consider how cosmetic surgery can possible change your social life. The aim is to improve on yourself as a person and not become someone entirely new and unfamiliar.

An important aspect of cosmetic treatment is one’s physical and emotional wellbeing. This is essential for the healing period. Good health is needed to avoid complications that can arise as a result of undergoing the knife. If you do have a health issue, then you will have to wait for a while to heal or gain control over it before you consider having surgery.

Planning for such surgery is also a time to give up on vices. Smoking should be given up as this can have adverse effects on the healing process. If the will to discontinue your vices is not there, then perhaps the grit to go through the process may not be there as well. Undergoing surgery is also an expensive affair. You have to consider how the expenses are going affect your family. Think things through before you add to the financial burden that your family is carrying. Spending on a credit card or taking out a loan is a very bad idea.

And finally talk in detail to your doctor. Analyze the pros and cons of the surgery and your expectations out of it. The idea is to be realistic and not destroy what you already have.…

Importance of Vitamins For Memory

Vitamins are organic chemicals that are necessary for normal metabolic functions and for tissue growth and healing. The intake of vitamins should be increased by those increasing periods of rapid body growth like those in puberty stage, by those who are pregnant, by those who are breastfeeding, by those with debilitating illnesses, and by those with improper diets such as the alcoholics and some elderly.
Drug companies offer vitamins and herbal supplements for specialized needs. Some of these agents have a combination of vitamins, minerals and herbs.
All vitamins are beneficial to the brain, but above all, vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) grabbed the attention of researchers, scientists and critics alike.
Vitamin B12, like folic acid, is essential for DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) synthesis. Vitamin B12 aids in the conversion of folic acid into its active form. With active folic acid, Vitamin B12 promotes cellular division. It is also needed for normal development of red blood cells in the bone marrow, and to maintain nervous system integrity, especially the myelin.
Vitamin B12 is beneficial to the brain and body since its deficiency might lead to weakness, anorexia, diarrhea, memory loss, insomnia, mood changes, dementia, psychosis and even megaloblastic anemia.
Folic acid is another vitamin beneficial to the body and brain. It is a vitamin absorbed from the small intestines and the active form of folic acid called folate is circulated to the tissues. Folic acid is essential for body growth. It is needed for DNA synthesis, and without it, there is a disruption in cellular division.
Folic acid deficiencies may lead to anorexia, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, stomatitis, hair loss and blood dyscrasias like megaloblastic anemia and leucopenia, deficiency during the first trimester of pregnancy can affect the development of the central nervous system (CNS) of the fetus. This may cause neural tube defects such as defective closure of the spinal cord, or anencephaly (lack of brain mass formation). To prevent these CNS anomalies, pregnant women must take adequate folic acid supplements at about 0.4 mg per day.
Every aspect of brain functionality is influenced by, and uses, vitamins. Most importantly, a balanced diet can provide you all the vitamins that you need. Many people, however, do not eat a balanced diet. If you fall into this category you should consider taking a mulitvitamin daily.…

Mobile Phone Health Risks

Mobile phone health risks concern send shockwaves rippling through the cancer research community in 2008 when Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in the US, sent a nerve jerking memo to his staff warning them about excessive use of mobile phones and the danger it may pose in activating cancer cells in your body. His greater area of concern was children and teens, whose brains are fragile and still developing.
Children and teens are more susceptible to genetic damage because the tissues in their brains and bodies are still growing and their cells are rapidly dividing, therefore the primary reason they should strictly limit the use of mobile phones. “Mobile phone health risks” has a higher level of susceptibility in children and teenagers and brings into sharp focus the types of health risks that the radio wave scientific data are now showing, coupled with the significantly higher penetration of radio wave radiation into their heads, brains, and eyes calls for immediate action to protect these young and vulnerable ones.
Adults are by no means out of the woods with high level of mobile phone health risks. Over the past few of years there has been much concern over the use of these phones and how they can be severely damaging to our health. Many are convinced with adequate amount of data, that the radiation given off by these phones could be harmful to us and that this could even result in cancerous growths developing in our brains.
One other frightening claim which has been around recently is the fact that our brains could be heating up from the radiation given off by these phones. However it does seem to be the case that excessive use of mobile phones really does seem to be the main problem. But it is just a matter of time before we are really going to find out exactly how or if the use of these phones is truly dangerous as we believe now, when the first generation of mobile phone users reach the ripe old age of sixty and up.
Never-the-less, there is no shortage of substantial research about mobile phone health risks. In 2005 a study in Turkey showed that long-term exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RFEMF) from the use of mobile phones could increase free radical levels in your brain, raising the risk of brain cancer. Again – nothing conclusive just yet.
In all of this mobile phone health risks concern, we are only as healthy as our cells. and when we think of health and vitality, few of us imagine the cell. Healthy cell life produces lots of energy and vitality – a high level of energy and resistance to stress. But how do we make sure our cells are working at full capacity on the energy level? The good news is, it’s not as hard as it may sound, because scientific research shows that good nutrition is the key.…
